My City, My Voice

The city where I live is called Volgograd. It was built on the Volga River, which is the longest river in Europe. In fact, the river is one of the main attractions of the city because it features a long embankment with numerous historical sites and monuments. Parallel to the embankment is a large green park that includes an area with a museum and large playgrounds. On some sections of the riverbank, there are beaches. However, because Volgograd has a large hydroelectric power station and a dam that divides it from the neighboring small town of Volzhsky, through which many barges and cargo ships pass, the water in the river is quite dirty. Still, some beaches are relatively clean and very popular in the summer, always crowded with people.

Another popular attraction in my city is the Motherland Calls monument on Mamayev Kurgan hill. This sculpture of a woman holding a sword and calling on people to be brave is 62 meters tall. It stands in memory of the Second World War. Surrounding this hill is a large park with many historical sculptures.

My city does not have a specific architectural style; on a small piece of land, modern new buildings can stand side by side with old, sometimes crumbling buildings from the 20th century.

In 2018, my city hosted the World Football Cup, and for this event, a large and beautiful stadium was built. It was supposed to be removed afterward, but someone’s plans changed, and now this stadium serves as a skate park when it is not hosting matches.

The climate of Volgograd is not particularly frigid, but it is still cold in the winter. Even at -20 °C, there is a chance that there will not be as much snow as we would like. Summer can be very hot, with temperatures reaching 38 °C, which makes walking outside during the summer holidays uncomfortable. Late spring and early autumn are the most pleasant periods of the year in Volgograd, when the weather is neither too cold nor too hot. In general, the climate is quite dry and dusty. The steppe begins outside the city, and if you drive about 500 km, you can reach the salt lake Elton, which is known for its healing mud. People often visit the local sanatorium to improve their health.

Unfortunately, aside from the attractions I mentioned earlier, my city is not much different from other ordinary Russian cities. Nevertheless, many of its residents seem to love it. Honestly, for me personally, it is quite difficult to find a special charm in my city. However, you can truly understand whether you like this city or not only by visiting it, which is fortunately possible because there is a small but still functional international airport.
