Flags & Festivals
The white-blue-red flag first appeared in Russia
under Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich. In 1667–1668,
the construction of the country's first warship, the
"Eagle", was underway, on which the tricolor
flag was raised. During the time of Peter I, the
tricolor had specific meanings: white symbolized
freedom, blue symbolized the Mother of God,
and red symbolized the power of the state.
Many symbolic meanings are attributed to the colors of the current Russian
flag, but there is no official interpretation of the colors. For most, white
symbolizes nobility and frankness; blue represents loyalty, honesty,
impeccability, and chastity and red signifies courage, bravery, generosity,
and love.
