"Shall I go to Cape Coast or to Elmina? I don’t know. I can’t tell."
The Dilemma of a Ghost is a popular play in Ghana by Ama Ata Aidoo. It features a young Ghanaian graduate from America, Ato, who returns to Ghana with a Black American wife, full of expectations for their future together. Ato's family finds it hard to cope with her origin while his wife struggles with the African culture. Ato, too, is torn between following
his new ideologies from abroad and his old Ghanaian culture, and this causes a rift in his relationship with his wife and family.
This play still rings true today in African culture, as new aspects of culture from the West clash with old African traditions. For example, childbearing is very essential in African culture, so barrenness and infidelity are suspected when a couple delays childbirth, as is done in the West.
I love this play for its educational value and the touch of humor that everyone can relate to. If you want to know who the ghost is in the play, well, watch to find out!
