Global Teaching Methods

Education is a discipline that deals with teaching and learning in schools or classes. Teachers

are the guides of the students, so they employ various types of teaching methods, which vary

from country to country.

In Sri Lanka, our learning system focuses on developing discipline and morality. Before the

COVID-19 pandemic, we did not have many methods of online teaching. Due to this, we

had to close down all educational institutions and adapt our traditional learning methods.

The main issues we faced were the lack of knowledge about technology, no internet access,

and insufficient facilities. However, we managed to overcome these challenges, and now we

have online teaching methods as well. Currently, we conduct online classes once or twice a

week, and we have seen significant improvements in this aspect due to the pandemic.

Our education structure is divided into five parts: Primary, Junior Secondary, Senior

Secondary, Collegiate, and Tertiary. In primary school (grades 1 to 5), each class has one

teacher, and students learn five subjects. Teachers engage students in various activities such

as singing songs, storytelling, and arts and crafts to make learning enjoyable. They also teach

students the rules they need to follow in school.

In grades 6 to 9, students have to learn 13 subjects, with one teacher per subject. Teachers

aim to build friendly relationships with students. During these grades, students interact with

multiple teachers, and each student may have their favorite. Grades 10 to 11 are more

demanding for both students and teachers, as students prepare for the O/L exam with nine

subjects. Teachers allocate time for students to discuss their subject-related issues. This

pattern continues in grades 12 to 13, where students have to study more intensively. In grade

13, teachers serve as guides, and students must work towards their dreams (passing the A/L

exam). According to teachers, students' success in this exam depends on their efforts, and

teachers provide additional support through after-school classes. Only upon passing the A/L

exam with excellent results can students enter a university.
