Flags & Festivals

According to our religion, we have a holiday named "Poya Day" in every month. It's the day of the full moon, falling on the day of the full moon in

the month of May. It's really important for the millions of Buddhists around the world. It is the day of Lord Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and passing

away. It is also known as the Buddhist festival of light.

Vesak is characterized by the alms-giving of refreshments to passersby. On the roads, there will be groups of people flagging down vehicles to offer

fruits and drinks. Not only on Poya Day, but also during this month, we can see these alms-giving activities. Bread, juice, rice, and milk are some of

the foods that we offer. Anyone can participate. Last time, the people in our village also gave rice and carried people, which we called "Dansals." Why is it known as the festival of light? It's because we hang and light bamboo-framed lanterns with fringed tails of tissue paper, which dance in the wind and light up the village houses on the night of the full moon. In every house, we make these lanterns on the day of the full moon, and we take part in processions and wear special white clothes. Friends may also exchange cards. There is also a special thing called "Thoran," a board with art decorated by thousands of lights. Vesak is the biggest Buddhist festival that we celebrate..
