World Literature
Under the starry night, upon the barricade, by red flags, the voice of freedom
flew and the floods of love ran. Les Misérables draws a romantic and vivid
picture of romance and revolution in nineteenth-century France. Since its
emergence, like the music of angels and the light of the sun, Les Misérables
has been one of the most famous and significant novels around the world.
Though it made its debut centuries ago, Les Misérables contains numerous
questions that remain sharp enough to awaken the world today, such as the
conflict between law and justice, moral standards, human rights, and the
freedom of the proletariat. Should laws let Jean Valjean off, giving way to
justice? Should fighters insist on revolution to end the dark ages of the past,
even though they had no chance? Will people rise to take their place until the earth is free?
Let us dream of a world full of everlasting love and a little less misery
