Diverse Chinese art features by different forms which were created by skillful painters, knowledgeable literati and diligent craftsmen. To be honest, learning Chinese art history is a perfect way to comprehend the Chinese national endowment--creativity and the positive altitude towards life.A particular historical period shaped particular culture and art forms.
In the pre-Qin period, slavery stated continued to grow, when in this time, bronzes became the main carrier of art. With diverse shapes of animals, exquisite patterns, the creative spirit of artists was embodied.
After the emperor Qin Shihuang united the whole country into one multi-ethinic country, and a series of rulers during the Han dynasty, the
art in China developed into its first prosperous period. We can see the customs of Qin and Han dynasties through coffins and lacquerware
in the tombs. The large number of cloud patterns indicate that people in the Qin and Han Dynasties pursued the happiness of the world
after death. What's more, the stone reliefs show us a clearer look through the patterns of horses, battle fields, kitchen in the noble family.
In the WeiJin,Southern and Northen Dynasties, with the spread of Buddhism, the grottoes were extensively excavated, the famous Mogao
Grottoes in Dunhuang shone the light of cultural exchanges between China and the Western regions. Mogao Grottoes not only has the
flying Apsaras, but also has story paintings full of philosophy, Sutra illustrations and so on.
When it comes to the Tang Dynasty, I always say it with tears in my eyes,"Though I have studied Chinese art for years, I can't entirely,
fully describe how flourishing and invigorating it was in different aspects, not only in art, strength, economy, status in the world." Figure
paintings, landscape paintings, flower-and-bird paintings, cave murals and colored sculptures...those art forms were taken to a time when
the whole society ran over with a positive attitude and an open, inclusive atmosphere.
When the Song Dynasty facing its problems in national governance, refined scholars drew ink landscape paintings to express their ambition and will to reclaim the North.
What's more, during this period, literati painting gradually developed. We can take a look at this painting:"Traveling amid the Mountains and Steams", Fan Kuan demonstrated
the momentum which can touch the bottom of one's heart with breath-taking brushwork.
As for Yuan, Ming and Qing, we cannot deny that in those times, Chinese art had the potential to progress a lot more, but however, in Ming and Qing, along with the government's
political and cultural policy, the art showed the development trend of summary. In spite of this, we could still watch the art ebb and flow with those fascinating paintings:"Dwelling
in the Fuchun Mountains"by Huang Gongwang,"Prosperous Suzhou" by Xu Yang....
Looking back at a thousand years, the Chinese always have an endless creative spirit to reflect on life by creating art works. In the new century, we cannot but look back on
history to absorb the nourishment of Chinese traditional art and then better our lives.
