Covid has come and gone. Thanks to the leadership of the Chinese government and the great sacrifices made by the Chinese people,
we now live in relative safety from the disease here in China. I will never forget the moving and heart-wrenching stories I saw on TV
and social media.
The Covid-19 pandemic was a direct affront to the right to live – the most basic of all human rights. The Chinese government acted swiftly and responsibly, both with regard to containing the virus at home and providing humanitarian aid abroad. China was the first to be hit with Covid-19, and it tried to buy as much time as it could for the world to prepare for this deadly onslaught. It shared public information with the world regarding the sequencing of the virus and issued multiple handbooks in foreign languages as well as Chinese to aid the global rapid response. Apart from donating over 2 billion doses of Covid vaccines to over 120 countries and international
organizations, it sent medical teams to many developing countries despite difficulties at home. It acted responsibly and pursuant to its
vision of a “shared future for mankind”. China’s Covid response was not perfect, but its government and its people all tried their best,
putting the right to live before all else, and saved millions from what could have been a loss of life.
4 years after the initial outbreak in Wuhan, Chinese citizens have mostly recovered from the ordeal. We are hopeful for the future and determined to join hands with the international community once again should a similar catastrophe befall mankind.
