Ancient History

The Roman Empire was one of the most important and powerful empires in ancient history. Many well-known figures have tried to replicate its greatness, such as Napoleon Bonaparte or Frederick II. However, at its inception, it was just a village of farmers. Many myths and legends surround the birth of Rome, such as the one about Romulus and Remus.

Romulus and Remus were twin sons of Mars. As babies, they were placed in a basket and thrown into a river. They were later discovered by a she-wolf who cared for and fed them. They were eventually found by a couple of farmers who raised them. When Romulus and Remus reached adulthood, they decided to establish a city. However, when Remus crossed the boundary where the walls of Rome were to be built (an act considered sacrilegious), he was killed. Romulus then became the first king of Rome. There are many versions of this myth, and it is more intricate than the summary I have provided. If you are interested, further research into the story can be quite fascinating.

According to the tale, the furrow was made on the Palatine Hill (one of the seven hills of Rome), a small hill, on the 21st of April 753 B.C. However, Rome only reached its maximum extension centuries later in 117 A.D. under the Emperor Trajan. At its peak, the empire encompassed 56 out of the 196 states recognized today and spanned three continents, namely Europe, Africa, and Asia.
