Flags & Festivals
Actually, when we speak about the culture of Sri Lanka, we have a lot of things to talk about. We have a long history and also festivals, traditional dances, music, foods, and more. We are known abroad for cricket, holistic medicine, and cultural exports like Ceylon tea, gems, and cinnamon. We also have a multicultural society with Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamil, Indian Tamil, Muslims, and others. So, I will write about all of them in these newsletters. First, I would like to write about the festival of our country... When we talk about festivals, the first and most important thing that comes to mind is the "Sinhala and Tamil New Year." It falls in the month of April (13th and 14th) when the sun moves from the house of Pisces to the house of Aries. We celebrate it as the beginning of a new year, not at midnight but at separate times determined by a period of a few hours. We call this time "Nona Gathe," and during this time, we should stop all work and engage in religious activities. On that day, we wear traditional outfits and have fun with traditional games that are enjoyed by both children and adults. We make sweets and milk rice and share them with our neighbors. All of us come together to celebrate, and it helps to increase our unity!
