Local Climate

Normally in Sri Lanka we don't have much climatic changes here. Sri Lanka is island in the Indian Ocean located between latitudes 5°55' and 9°51'N and longitudes 79°41' and 81° 53' E. And this island has a maximum length of 268vmiles (432km) and a maximum width of 139 miles (224km). Ancient Greek geographers called it Taprobane while Arabs call it as Serendip. Later European magmarkers called Ceylon and in 1972 it became Sri Lanka. Normally we have three zones the wet zone intermediate zone and dry zone. In wet zone we have annual rainfall of over 2500mm and in dry zone it's 1750mm. In intermediate zone it's between 2500mm and 1750mm. In there we can see lots of rivers it's more than hundred as I remember all major rivers flow radially from central highlands to the sea. The sea in Sri Lanka is warm all year around mostly we have summer season here . In summer season we have nearly 8/ 9 hours of sunshine per day. In rainy season also there are a few hours of sunshine. But it is true that we have low temperature in South Central mountain ranges, it's like 15C° - 20C°. Normally our daily maximum temperature is about 31C° all year round. We are known as one of hottest country in the world.
