Issue Theme/Column:
Poetic Expression
We go on tragic campaigns with
Tang soldiers
We listen to magical music from
a guy called Li
We regress in maths,
jumping off the third deviation
Into a swirling cloud of
electromagnetic forces where,
Our minds got turned around
like an electron in a magnetic
field
The bonds of friendship
between us, aren't σ bonds or π
bonds but hydrogen bonds
Not making us any smarter but
giving us a bigger heart
Such is the beauty of
knowledge!
Notes on Text:
1. "燕歌行并序" – 高适
2. "李凭箜篌引" - 李贺 (a poem
describing Li's music)
3. Regression equation - used to find a
linear relationship between two
variables.
4. The three-sigma rule predicts that in
normal distributions, 99.7% of
observations fall within within the
first three standard deviations (µ ± 3σ)
of the mean.
5. Electrons move in circles in a
magnetic field.
6. σ bonds and π bonds connect atoms
within molecules and strengthen their
chemical properties. Hydrogen bonds
between water molecules do not affect
its chemical properties but raises its
boiling point.
