Russian culture in the 19th century reached unprecedented heights. The artistic creativity of this era reflected all the significant events that occurred during that time. At the end of the 18th century, Russia underwent many reforms, and during this era, Russian artists began to be sent abroad to study the experience of European masters. These trips were funded by the
government. Painters returned with new ideas and developed new styles in their homeland, including baroque, rococo, classicism, and genres such as still life, landscapes, city views, and ceremonial portraits. The classical painting of those years was based on ancient art. There were many famous Russian artists during this period, and here are some of them.
Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky (1817-1900) was a wonderful marine painter known for his famous paintings such as "The Black Sea," "Among the Waves," "Neapolitan Night," "Night. Blue Wave," and others.
Viktor Vasnetsov (1848-1926) was a master of fairy tale and epic motifs. His paintings are known for the brightness of their colors, the beauty and natural emotions on the characters' faces, and their atmospheric quality. Some of his masterpieces include "Bogatyrs," "Ivan Tsarevich on the Gray Wolf," "Flying Carpet," "Warriors of the Apocalypse," and others. Ilya Efimovich Repin (1844–1930) was a great Russian realist artist, a master of portraiture, history, and everyday life. His most famous paintings include "Barge Haulers on the Volga," "Sadko in the Underwater Kingdom," "Procession," "Ivan the
Terrible and his son Ivan November 16, 1581," and others.
