Winter Festivals

As there are two calendars in use in China today, Chinese people celebrate two New Years: one in the Gregorian calendar and the other in the Chinese lunar calendar, otherwise known as the Spring Festival. Compared to the latter, the former is a less grand affair, with only a single day off for most workers compared to a week for the Spring Festival. That said, because the day prior is a school day, students are able to celebrate the New Year together, which makes for some fun experiences.

One of the best memories I have of middle school was hosting the New Year class performances for three years. I have such fond memories of the whole process and the festive spirit in the air. Classes move their desks to the sides, making room for a makeshift stage area. Students come up to sing songs, play games, and much more. During the pandemic, when we were forced to stay home, many of us decided to host online parties, which made it special.

Sending everyone holiday wishes from Nanchang!
