Christmas Specials

In Russia, our Christmas is on the 7th of January, not on the 25th of December. On our Christmas Day, we always make a lot of food - salads, meat dishes, and desserts. Delicious food is one of the reasons everyone loves Christmas.

The main salad is Olivie or Russian salad. It consists of meat, potatoes, salted cucumbers, eggs, and mayonnaise. Another popular salad is Venegret, made from potatoes, carrots, sunflower oil, and salted cucumbers. As for the meat dishes, when many family members gather together, they often make Shashlik, a type of kebab. For dessert, there are Pryaniki - honey spice cookies. Usually, people buy these cookies from a shop, and they are made with vanilla, nutmeg, allspice, and anise flavors. Another dessert - Kutya. Kutya is a sweet and fruity cereal, usually made with honey, dried fruits, nuts, and sometimes spices or poppy seeds. Of course, there are many more Christmas dishes that we make on the 7th of January, but on New Year, which will be in a week, we eat even more.
