Chinese New Year

Lasting for 15 days, Chinese New Year starts from the first day of the first lunar month and ends on the full moon 15 days later. Dating back to the Yin Shang period, the Spring Festival originated from the worship of gods and ancestors, symbolizing people’s hope for getting rid of ill-fortune and promoting to a higher position. Chinese New Year has its roots in a legend. As the tale goes, a beast called Nian would spread terror and destruction in a village, ranging from devouring livestock to attacking villagers. Seized by fear, people had no alternative but to escape when Nian ransacked the village. Nothing changed until a man took revenge on Nian and scared it away with red color and loud cracking noises. Therefore, the customs formed that every family hangs lanterns, puts up red couplets, and sets off fireworks to welcome the New Year.
